History of the 26 January Republic Day of India
India gained its independence from the rule of the British on 15th of August 1947 after the Indian Independence movement. The Indian Independence movement was noted for it being largely of nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience which was led by the Indian National Congress. By then, India did not have their own permanent constitution. Instead the laws were based on a modified colonial Government of India Act of 1935. To create the new Constitution of India, a drafting committee was appointed to draft a permanent constitution which was led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as the chairperson of the committee. The draft which was prepared by the committee was submitted to the assembly on 4th November 1947. In a span of 2 years, 11 months and 18 days for 166 days, the assembly met in sessions which were open for the public and carriedout deliberations and modifications and in the end, the assembly of 308 members signed two hand written copies of the document of the constitution of India on the 24 January 1950. After two days, on 26th of January 1950, the Constitution was brought into effect throughout the nation.
